Sewing:
We will start with Half Square Triangles. You will need the Fabric A, B, C, and E 4" squares.
Draw a diagonal line on the wrong side of the Fabric C and E squares.
Place the above squares right sides together with Fabric A and B. One C square and one E square with each. Sew 1/4" seam on both sides of the drawn line.
Cut apart on drawn line.
Press toward Fabric A and B.You will have 8 slightly oversized Half Square Triangles. Trim them all to 3 1/2".
You should have 8 Half Square Triangles.
Now we will do the Flying Geese. You will be using a "stitch and flip" method to these units. You will need the Fabric D rectangles and the Fabric C and E 3 1/2" squares.
Draw a diagonal line on the wrong side of the Fabric C and E squares.
Take 2 of the Fabric D rectangles and place the 2 Fabric C squares right sides together as shown below:
**Tip: When you sew these Flying Geese units, sew just to the outside of the line as shown in the following picture as this will help when you press to keep your Flying Geese the correct size.
Trim the corner leaving a 1/4" seam.
Press toward Fabric C.
Place a Fabric E square right sides together on the other side of the above units.
Sew just to the outside of the drawn line. Trim your 1/4" seam allowance.
Press toward Fabric E.
Repeat the above steps for the other 2 Flying Geese. This time both sides have the Fabric E squares.
These 4 Flying Geese units should measure 3 1/2" x 6 1/2".
For the rest of this block, I pressed the seams open to reduce the fabric bulk.
You need the 2 Fabric A/C and the 2 Fabric B/C Half Square Triangles.
Sew these together as shown below. Press open.
Now take the 2 Flying Geese units that have Fabric C and E and place as shown below.
Sew these together. Press open.
These should measure 6 1/2" square.
Now take the 2 Fabric A/E Half Square Triangles and the 2 Fabric B/E Half Square Triangles.
Sew these together and press open.
Grab the remaining Flying Geese units and the above units as shown.
Sew together and press open.
These units should measure 6 1/2" square.
Layout the 6 1/2" squares as shown below.
Sew these together like a Four Patch. Sew the top 2 and bottom 2 squares together, pressing the seams open.
Sew these rows together to complete the block. Press seam open.
There you have it, the Blockade block. I love how these colors play with each other!
