Block of the Week Setting Options

You have a lot of options to use these 52 blocks. I will give you a few options to make some larger quilts with these blocks and some estimated yardage for optional sashing, cornerstones and borders. (Please note: the pictures I am using are from EQ8 and not all of the blocks are the ones we have made so these pictures are just a guide, not an exact layout for you)

Option 1: (84" x 96") No borders or sashing

Make 4 additional blocks so that you have 56 blocks. Make those 4 blocks the same and use them as your 4 corners.

Layout the blocks (8 rows of 7 blocks) and sew together in rows. Press seams in one direction, alternating the directions in each row so that you can interlock your seams when you sew the rows together.

For binding, you will need 2/3 - 3/4 yards depending on how wide you prefer to cut your binding strips.

Option 2: 108" square with sashing and border

Yardage estimates:

2 1/2 yards for sashing

1/3 yard for cornerstones (unless you want to use all your scraps)

1 1/2 yards for borders

3/4 -7/8 yard for binding depending on how wide you cut your binding

Choose 49 of the 52 blocks (you can use the remaining 3 blocks for pillows, a label for quilt, or a table runner) and lay them out 7 blocks across by 7 blocks down.

Cutting:

Sashing: Cut 7 - 12 1/2" strips and subcut these strips into 112 - 2 1/2" x 12 1/2" rectangles.

Cornerstones - If you use your scraps, you need 64 - 2 1/2" squares. If you want to use one fabric, cut the 4 - 2 1/2" strips and subcut these strips into 64 - 2 1/2" squares.

Borders - Cut 11 - 4 1/2" strips. Sew these 11 strips together into one long piece. Then cut 2 border pieces at 100 1/2" lengths (Side Borders) and 2 border pieces at 108 1/2" lengths (Top and Bottom Borders).

Sew quilt in rows as follows: (see picture below)

Row 1, 3, 5, 7, 9, 11, 13, and 15: Alternate 8 cornerstones and 7 sashing rectangles, press toward sashing.

Row 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12, and 14: Alternate 8 sashing rectangles and 7 blocks, press toward sashing.

Sew the Side Borders on and press toward Borders

Sew the Top and Bottom Borders on and press toward Borders.

Option 3: 93" x 110" (with Border) or 85" x 102" (without Border)

Yardage estimates:

Corner and Setting triangles - 1 1/2" yards

Borders - 1 1/4 yards

Binding - 3/4 - 7/8 yard depending on how wide you cut your binding

Choose 50 of the 52 Blocks (use the remaining 2 for your label or pillows)

Cutting:

Corner Triangles: Cut 2 - 9 3/8" squares and cut them once on the diagonal

Setting Triangles - Cut 5 - 18 1/4" squares and cut them twice on the diagonal (you will have 20 triangles but you only need 18)

Borders: Cut 11 - 4 1/2" strips. Sew these 11 strips together into one long piece. Then cut 2 border pieces at 102 1/2" lengths (Side Borders) and 2 border pieces at 93 1/2" lengths (Top and Bottom Borders). (You may need to trim borders slightly to fit accurately)

Sew together in diagonal rows. Pressing seams in one direction and alternating the direction for each row. (See picture for guidance) The corner triangles get sewn on at the end, once all of your rows are sewn together.

Row 1: Setting triangle, Block, Setting Triangle. Press toward Setting triangles

Row 2: Setting Triangle, 3 Blocks, Setting Triangle

Row 3: Setting Triangle, 5 Blocks, Setting Triangle

Row 4: Setting Triangle, 7 Blocks, Setting Triangle

Row 5: Setting Triangle, 9 Blocks

Row 6: 9 Blocks, Setting Triangle

Row 7: Setting Triangle, 7 Blocks, Setting Triangle

Row 8: Setting Triangle, 5 Blocks, Setting Triangle

Row 9: Setting Triangle, 3 Blocks, Setting Triangle

Row 10: Setting Triangle, 1 Block, Setting Triangle

Sew these rows together, pressing in one direction or press seams open. Add your 4 corner triangles, press toward corner triangle.

Sew the Side Borders on and press toward Borders

Sew the Top and Bottom Borders on and press toward Borders.

Option 4: Make 2 - 75" square quilts

Yardage estimate (for each quilt, double this yardage to make 2)

1 1/8 yards for sashing

1/8 yard for cornerstones (unless you want to use all your scraps)

1 1/8 yards for borders

1/2 - 3/4 yard for binding depending on how wide you cut your binding

Choose 25 blocks for each quilt (total of 50) and use the remaining 2 blocks for labels for the quilts.

Cutting (For 1 quilt):

Sashing: Cut 3 - 12 1/2" strips subcut into 60 - 2" x 12 1/2" rectangles

Cornerstones: Cut 2 - 2" strips subcut into 36 - 2" squares

Borders: Cut 8 - 3 1/2" strips. Sew these strips together into one long strip. Then cut 2 border pieces at 69 1/2" lengths (Side Borders) and 2 border pieces at 75 1/2" lengths (Top and Bottom Borders).

Sew quilt in rows as follows: (see picture below)

Row 1, 3, 5, 7, 9, and 11: Alternate 6 cornerstones and 5 sashing rectangles, press toward sashing.

Row 2, 4, 6, 8, and 10: Alternate 6 sashing rectangles and 5 blocks, press toward sashing.

Sew the Side Borders on and press toward Borders.

Sew the Top and Bottom Borders on and press toward Borders.

Repeat for 2nd quilt.

Hopefully some of these options will work for you. You can always make several smaller quilts (For example, you could make 4 - 12 Block quilts adding sashing and cornerstones and borders as you wish)

We can't wait to see what you do with all of your blocks.
