This week we are doing Half Square Triangles and making a Double Pinwheel. Your Half Square Triangles will be slightly oversized so you will be trimming them down to their accurate size.
You will need 3 Colors and a Background Fabric.
Fabric A - Color 1 (Dark - Pinwheel)
Fabric B - Color 2 (Light - Center Pinwheel)
Fabric C - Color 3 ( Corner Squares)
Fabric D - Background
Fabric A - Cut 4 - 4" squares
Fabric B - Cut 2 - 4" squares
Fabric C - Cut 4 - 3 1/2" squares
Fabric D - Cut 2 - 4" squares
Fabric D - Cut 4 - 3 1/2" squares
Half Square Triangles:
Draw a diagonal line on the wrong side of the Fabric B 4" squares and the Fabric D 4" squares.
These squares will be placed right sides together with the 4 Fabric A 4" squares.
Sew 1/4" on either side of the drawn line as shown below.
Cut apart on drawn line.
Press toward Fabric A.
Trim all of these Half Square Triangles down to 3 1/2". I recommend using a trim tool such as a Bloc Loc Ruler (we have 6 1/2" Bloc Loc rulers in stock) or if using one of your quilting square rulers, line up the 45 degree line on your ruler on your diagonal seam to get the most accurate trim.
You will have a total of 8 Half Square Triangles (4 - Fabric A/B and 4 - Fabric A/D).
Sew the 4 Half Square Triangle (Fabric A/D combo) to the 4 Fabric D 3 1/2" squares as shown.
Press toward the Fabric D squares.
Make the center Pinwheel by laying out the Fabric A/B Half Square Triangles as shown.
Sew the top 2 Half Square Triangles together and the bottom 2 Half Square Triangles together as shown. Press toward the darker fabric.
Sew these 2 pieces together to complete the pinwheel and press open.
Layout all the pieces of the block as shown:
Sew together in rows. Press toward the Fabric C corner squares and the middle pinwheel.
Complete the block by sewing the rows together. I pressed these last 2 seams open.
Congratulations! Week 7 and the Double Pinwheel block is complete!
Don't forget to post your picture on the Ruth's Stitchery Facebook page to be entered into February's drawing.
