Can you believe it, we are on Week 49, only 3 weeks to go. This week we are making the Coronation Frame. The center is a 16 Patch. You can use 2 colors to make the center like I did or you could use a lot of different colors if you'd like to bring more fabrics into your block. If you choose to do this, you will cut 2" squares for all the pieces instead of the strips that are in our cutting directions.
You will need 4 colors and a Background
Fabric A - Color 1
Fabric B - Color 2
Fabric C - Color 3
Fabric D - Color 4
Fabric E - Background
Cutting:
Fabric A - Cut 2 - 2" x 8 1/2" strips
Fabric B - Cut 4 - 4" squares
Fabric C - Cut 2 - 4" squares
Fabric D - Cut 2 - 4" squares
Fabric E - Cut 2 - 2" x 8 1/2" strips
Fabric E - Cut 4 - 4" squares
Sewing:
Starting with the center, lay out the Fabric A and Fabric E strips as shown.
Sew these 4 strips together and press toward Fabric A strips.
Cut the above unit into 4 - 2" segments.
Take the above strip sets and flip the 2nd and 4th strip around to arrange them as shown below.
Sew together and press seams in one direction.
This should measure 6 1/2" square.
Now we will work on our Half Square Triangles.
Draw a diagonal line on the wrong side of the Fabric E squares and the Fabric C squares.
Looking at the picture below, you will group together 2 Fabric E and 2 Fabric B squares, 2 Fabric B and 2 Fabric C squares, and 2 Fabric E and 2 Fabric D squares.
Starting with a Fabric B and E square and sew 1/4" away from both sides of the drawn line.
Cut apart on the drawn line.
Press toward Fabric B.
Your Half Square Triangles will be slightly oversized and will be trimmed down later.
Repeat to make the rest of the Half Square Triangles.
Trim all of the Half Square Triangles to 3 1/2" square.
Once you have all of the Half Square Triangles trimmed, lay out the 4 Fabric D/E squares and the 4 B/C squares as shown.
Sew together. Press toward the Fabric B/C square. You will have 4 - 3 1/2" x 6 1/2" rectangles.
Now lay out all of the units as shown to complete the block.
Sew together into rows. Press toward the Fabric B/E corner squares and toward the center 16 Patch.
Sew the 3 rows together and press seams open.
Your Coronation Frame and Week 49 is complete!
Don't forget to post your pictures on the Ruth's Stitchery Facebook page to be entered into our December drawing.
