Block of the Week 47 Key Lime Pie

Block of the Week 47 Key Lime Pie

This week is a block called Key Lime Pie. This block gives you the opportunity to use several fabrics in one block. We will be strip piecing the Four Patches and making oversized units and trimming down.

You will need 5 colors and a Background

Fabric A - Color 1

Fabric B - Color 2

Fabric C - Color 3

Fabric D - Color 4

Fabric E - Color 5

Fabric F - Background

Fabric A - Cut 1 - 2 1/2" x 10 1/2" strip

Fabric B - Cut 1 - 2 1/2" x 10 1/2" strip

Fabric C - Cut 2 - 5 1/2" squares

Fabric D - Cut 2 - 5 1/2" squares

Fabric E - Cut 1 - 4 1/2" square

Fabric F - Cut 2 - 2 1/2" x 10 1/2" strips

Fabric F - Cut 2 - 5 1/2" squares

We will start with the Four Patch units. You need the Fabric A and B strips and the 2 Fabric F strips.

Sew the Fabric A strip to a Fabric F strip and the Fabric B strip to a Fabric F strip. Press toward Fabrics A and B.

Cut the strip set into 4 - 2 1/2" segments. Your strip set is slightly longer then you need for the 4 segments so you can straighten the edge first before you cut the segments.

Repeat for the Fabric B/F strip set.

Arrange the segments from above as shown for the Four Patch.

Sew together. Twist the seam to press.

You will have 4 Four Patch Units that measure 4 1/2".

Draw a diagonal line on the wrong side of the Fabric F squares.

We are going to make Half Square Triangles using the above Fabric F squares and the Fabric C squares.

With right sides together sew 1/4" away from both sides of the drawn line.

Cut apart on the line.

Press toward Fabric C. You will have 4 Half Square Triangles.

Lay your Half Square Triangles out exactly as shown in the picture above. You are going to cut these Half Square Triangles in half diagonally as shown below.

You only need the left side pieces for this block.

Cut the Fabric D squares in half on the diagonal.

You are going to sew the partial Half Square Triangles to the Fabric D triangles. Fold the Fabric D triangle in half along the long side to find the center. Put a finger crease.

With right sides together, line up the seam of the partial Half Square Triangle with the center of the Fabric D triangle and pin in place.

Sew together. Press toward Fabric D.

Repeat for the rest of the partial Half Square Triangles and Fabric D triangles. You will have 4 slightly oversized units.

Trim to 4 1/2". Line the 45 degree line of your ruler on the large seam and the corner of your ruler as shown below to trim your units accurately.

You will have 4 units that measure 4 1/2".

We have all the units ready to complete our block. Lay them out as shown below.

Sew the units into rows. Pess toward the Four Patch units and the center square.

Sew the rows together. Press the seams open.

You have completed the Key Lime Pie block. I loved making this one, I hope you did too.

Don't forget to post your pictures on the Ruth's Stitchery Facebook page to be entered into our November drawing.
