Sewing:
We will start with Half Square Triangles. Draw a diagonal line on the wrong side of the 6 Fabric F 3" squares.
You are going to be making 12 total with the Fabric A, B, and F 3" squares.
Starting with the Fabric A/F squares. Place a Fabric A and F square right sides together. Sew 1/4" away from both sides of the drawn line.
Cut apart on the drawn line.
Repeat for the other Fabric A and F squares. Press toward Fabric A. you will have 4 slightly oversized Half Square Triangles.
Repeat these steps for the Fabric B and F squares. You will have 8 slightly oversized Half Square Triangles.
Trim all of these Half Square Triangles to 2 1/2".
Layout the Half Square Triangle units and the Fabric C squares as shown.
Sew the top 2 squares and the bottom 2 squares together. Press toward the Fabric A/F Half Square Triangle and Fabric C square.
Sew the top to the bottom. To press the seam, I flipped the seam as shown.
You will have 4 of these units that measure 4 1/2" square.
Now we will do the Flying Geese.
Using a marking tool like the Magic Wand, mark the sew lines on the wrong side of the 4 Fabric D squares.
Place 2 of the Fabric D squares from above right sides together on the Fabric F 5 1/2" square as shown.
Sew on the drawn lines.
Cut apart down the middle of the drawn lines.
Press toward Fabric D.
Place a Fabric D square, right sides together as shown.
Sew on the drawn lines. Repeat for the other unit. Cut apart between the drawn lines.
Press toward Fabric D. You will have 4 slightly oversized Flying Geese.
Trim these Flying Geese (I like to use the Wing Clipper) to 2 1/2" x 4 1/2".
Take the Fabric D rectangles and the above Flying Geese and lay them out as shown.
Sew these together. **Note: place the Flying Geese on top of the solid rectangle so you can see where your seam is hitting the point of the Flying Geese.
Press toward the Fabric D rectangle. These units should measure 4 1/2" square.
We can now lay out all of our units to complete our block. Lay them out as shown.
Sew together in rows. Sew top row, center row, and bottom row together. Press toward the Half Square Triangle units and the Fabric E center square.
Sew these rows together. Press seams toward the center row.
Your Summer Winds block is complete!
