Block of the Week 41 Ornate Star

Block of the Week 41 Ornate Star

This week's block is the Ornate Star. We will be making Square in a Square blocks and Hour Glass Blocks to create this star. Your blocks will be just slightly larger so you can trim down to the exact size.

You will need 4 colors and a background

Fabric A - Color 1

Fabric B - Color 2

Fabric C - Color 3

Fabric D - Color 4

Fabric E - Background

Fabric A - Cut 4 - 3 3/8" squares

Fabric B - Cut 2 - 5 1/2" squares

Fabric C - Cut 1 - 5 1/2" square

Fabric D - Cut 1 - 4 1/2" square

Fabric E - Cut 8 - 3" squares

Fabric E - Cut 1 - 5 1/2" square

Let's begin with the Square in a Square blocks.

Take the 8 Fabric E 3" squares and cut them in half on the diagonal.

Using the triangles from above and the 4 Fabric A squares, lay the pieces out as shown.

You will be sewing the background triangles to the Fabric B squares. To do this, fold a triangle in half on the diagonal side of the triangle to find the center.

Fold the side of a Fabric A square to find the center.

With right sides together, line up the center of these pieces and pin in place.

Sew these pieces together. Do the same steps for the opposite side of the Fabric A square, lining up the centers and pinning in place.

Sew together as shown.

Press toward the Fabric E triangles.

Repeat for the remaining 2 sides of the Fabric A square.

Press toward Fabric E triangles.

Repeat these steps for the remaining Fabric A squares. You will have 4 Square in a Square blocks that are slightly oversized.

Trim the above squares to 4 1/2". Make sure you have 1/4" seam at the points of your Fabric A squares.

Now we will make the Hour Glass blocks.

Draw 2 diagonal lines on the wrong sides of the Fabric B, C, and E 5 1/2" squares.

Group these squares together as shown.

Start by making Half Square Triangles. Place a Fabric B and E square together right sides together. Sew 1/4" seam on both sides of a drawn line.

Then place a Fabric B and C square right sides together. Sew 1/4" seam on both sides of drawn line.

Cut these apart on drawn line.

Press toward Fabric B.

Now take a Fabric B/E Half Square triangle and a Fabric B/C Half Square triangle and place them right sides together with the Fabric B triangles on opposite sides of each other as shown.

Sew a 1/4" seam on both sides of drawn line.

Repeat for the other set. Cut apart on drawn line.

Twist the center of the seam as shown to reduce fabric bulk when you press.

You will have 4 oversized Hour Glass blocks.

Trim these down to 4 1/2". Use the 45 degree line on your ruler to help keep the block straight as you trim.

Now that we have all the blocks made, lay them out as shown.

Sew the blocks together into 3 rows. Press toward the Hour Glass blocks.

Now sew these rows together. Press seams toward the middle row.

Your Ornate Star block is complete!

Don't forget to post your pictures on the Ruth's Stitchery Facebook page to be entered into our October drawing.
