This week's block is called Flagstones. We are strip piecing our Nine Patch Blocks and making Half Square Triangles. This is a pretty simple block and you should have no problems with the easy contruction.
You will need 4 colors and a background
Fabric A - Color 1
Fabric B - Color 2
Fabric C - Color 3
Fabric D - Color 4
Fabric E - Background
Cutting:
Fabric A - Cut 2 - 2 1/2" x 10 1/2" strips
Fabric B - Cut 2 - 2 1/2" x 5 1/2" strips
Fabric C - Cut 4 - 3" squares
Fabric D - Cut 2 - 2 1/2" x 5 1/2" strips
Fabric D - Cut 4 - 2 1/2" squares
Fabric E - Cut 1 - 2 1/2" x 10 1/2" strip
Fabric E - Cut 2 - 2 1/2" x 5 1/2" strips
Fabric E - Cut 4 - 3" squares
Sewing:
We will start with the Nine Patch Blocks. You will need the Fabric A and E 2 1/2" x 10 1/2" strips.
Sew these strips together as shown. Press toward the Fabric A strips.
Subcut this strip set into 4 - 2 1/2" x 6 1/2" segments.
Now you need 1 Fabric B strip and 2 Fabric E strips (2 1/2" x 5 1/2")
Sew these strips together as shown and press toward Fabric B.
Subcut this strip set into 2 - 2 1/2" x 6 1/2" segments.
Layout these segments as shown below.
Sew these segments together. Press away from the center. You will have 2 Nine Patch blocks that measure 6 1/2" square.
Now you will need the 2 Fabric D strips and the remaining Fabric B strip.
Sew these strips together as shown above. Press toward Fabric D.
Cut this strip set into 2 - 2 1/2" x 6 1/2" segments.
Now we will make our Half Square Triangles. As we have been doing in previous weeks, we are making them slightly larger so we can trim down for accuracy.
Draw a diagonal line on the wrong side of the 4 Fabric E squares.
Placing these Fabric E squares right sides together with the Fabric C squares, sew 1/4" seam on both sides of drawn line.
Once you have sewn all 4 of these, cut apart on the drawn line.
Press toward Fabric C. You should have 8 slightly oversized Half Square Triangles.
Trim each of these down to 2 1/2" square.
Layout the Half Square Triangles and the Fabric D squares as shown. You should have 4 in each pile.
Sew these together. Press toward the Fabric D square. You will have 4 units that look like this.
Take the Fabric B/D strip set and the units from above and lay them out as shown.
Sew the rows together and press toward the center row. You will have 2 blocks that measure 6 1/2" square.
It's time to put these blocks together. Layout the Nine Patch blocks and the blocks from above as shown.
Sew the top 2 blocks and the bottom 2 blocks together, matching the seams as you go. Press toward the Nine Patch Blocks.
Sew the top and bottom together, matching the seams. Press final seam open.
The Flagstones block is complete. Great job!
