I was curious about the name of this quilt block so I did a little research. This block's designer lived during the Revolutionary War and she allowed Coxey's Army (who was marching on Washington) to camp on her land. The Coxey's Camp block is a Four Patch within a Square in a Square and then a pieced frame goes around the center. We will be strip piecing the Four Patch and the frame. We are making the Square in a Square slightly larger so you can trim down.
You will need 5 colors and a background
Fabric A - Color 1
Fabric B - Color 2
Fabric C - Color 3
Fabric D - Color 4
Fabric E - Color 5
Fabric F - Background
Fabric A - Cut 4 - 3 1/2" squares
Fabric B - Cut 2 - 2" x 13 1/2" strips
Fabric C - Cut 2 - 4" squares
Fabric D - Cut 1 - 2 5/8" x 5 1/2"
Fabric E - Cut 1 - 2 5/8" x 5 1/2"
Fabric F - Cut 2 - 2" x 13 1/2" strips
Four Patch: Sew the Fabric D and E strips together. Press toward Fabric D.
Cut this strip set into 2 - 2 5/8" segments. You will have 2 segments that measure 2 5/8" x 4 3/4".
Flip one segment around as shown.
Sew together, matching the center seam. I twisted the seam to press.
Your Four Patch should measure 4 3/4" square.
Square in a Square:
Cut the Fabric C squares in half on the diagonal.
You will be sewing the Fabric C triangles to the sides of the Four Patch.
Take a Fabric C triangle and fold it in half on the long side to find the center. Make a finger crease.
Using the finger crease, pin the triangle to one side of the Four Patch using the seam as the center.
Sew 1/4" seam. Find the center of another triangle and pin on the opposite side from where you added the first triangle.
Sew 1/4" seam. Press toward the Fabric C triangles.
Repeat these steps for the 2 remaining triangles.
Press toward the Fabric C triangles. Your Square in a Square will be slightly larger.
Using a 6 1/2" ruler (or larger) trim the Square in a Square to a 6 1/2" square. **Make sure you leave 1/4" seam allowance at the points of your Four Patch.
Take the 2 Fabric B and Fabric F strips and sew them together as shown. Press toward Fabric B.
Cut these strip sets into 4 - 6 1/2" segments. (3 1/2" x 6 1/2")
Layout your block pieces as shown below.
Sew the top, middle, and bottom rows together. Press toward the Fabric B/E strip sets.
Sew the rows together, matching the seams. Press seams away from center row.
Your Coxey's Camp block is complete!
