Week 33 is here and we are making a Twirly Whirl block. I named it because it reminded me of those toys when I was little that looked like a Pinwheel and they spun when you blew on them.
You will need 3 colors and a background
Fabric A - Color 1
Fabric B - Color 2
Fabric C - Color 3
Fabric D - Background
Fabric A - Cut 4 - 3 1/2" x 6 1/2" rectangles
Fabric B - Cut 4 - 3 1/2" x 6 1/2" rectangles
Fabric C - Cut 4 - 3 1/2" squares
Fabric D - Cut 12 - 3 1/2" squares
Draw a diagonal line on the wrong side of the Fabric C and D 3 1/2" squares.
You need the Fabric A rectangles and 8 Fabric D squares.
Place a Fabric D square right sides together on the right side edge of Fabric A as shown.
Sew just to the outside edge of the drawn line.
**Optional: If you don't want to have a lot of waste, you can sew another line 1/2" away from the first line. You can do this each time you add a square. You will end up with extra Half Square Triangles (see picture at the end of the pattern)
Cut apart in between the sewn lines.
Set aside the small corner piece and press toward Fabric D.
Place a Fabric D square right sides together on the left side of the above unit.
Sew just to the outside edge of the drawn line. (You can sew the optional sew line 1/2" away for all of these pieces if you'd like). Cut apart.
Press toward Fabric D. Repeat for the rest of the Fabric A rectangles. You will have 4 units that measure 3 1/2" x 6 1/2".
You will need the Fabric B rectangles, Fabric C squares, and the remaining Fabric D squares.
Place a Fabric D square right sides together on the left side of Fabric B.
Sew just to the outside edge of the drawn line. (**You can continue to sew the other sew line 1/2" away if you don't want the fabric waste)
Press toward Fabric D. Place a Fabric C square right sides together with above unit on right side as shown.
Sew just to outside edge of drawn line. Cut apart.
Press toward Fabric C. Repeat for the rest of the Fabric B rectangles. You will have 4 units that should measure 3 1/2" x 6 1/2".
Sew these 2 units together as shown.
Press seam open. Repeat for the rest. You will have 4 units that measure 6 1/2" squares.
Lay out the 4 units as shown below.
Sew the top 2 units together and the bottom 2 units together. Press seams open.
Sew these 2 rows together. Press the seam open.
You have completed the Twirly Whirl block!
**If you chose to sew the 1/2" away each time you added a square, you will end up with 16 Half Square Triangles that you can use later.
Don't forget to post your pictures on the Ruth's Stitchery Facebook page to be entered in the August drawing.
