For Week 28 we are doing the Yankee Puzzle Block. We are going to do both methods of Flying Geese that we have done previously. The reason we are doing both methods is that one set of 4 Flying Geese have different corners on the geese.
You will need 2 colors and a background
Fabric A - Color 1
Fabric B - Color 2
Fabric C - Background
Fabric A - Cut 1 - 7 1/2" square
Fabric A - Cut 4 - 3 1/2" squares
Fabric B - cut 4 - 3 1/2" x 6 1/2" rectangles
Fabric C - Cut 4 - 4" squares
Fabric C - Cut 4 - 3 1/2" squares
Flying Geese - Method 1 (Make 4)
Using a 1/4" marking tool (like the Magic Wand), line up the tool on the wrong sides of the 4" Background squares on the diagonal. Draw your sew lines as shown.
Take 2 of the above Background squares and place them right sides together onto the 7 1/2" Fabric A square as shown. (Note: be sure to leave a little space of the Fabric A square showing around the edge as this is helpful for when you trim them up)
Sew on the drawn lines.
Cut apart down the middle of your sew lines. Press toward Fabric C (Background).
Place another Fabric C Background 4" squares, right sides together as shown.
Sew on the drawn lines and then cut apart.
Repeat for the second unit. Press toward Fabric C. You will have 4 slightly oversized Flying Geese.
Trim these Flying Geese to 3 1/2" x 6 1/2" (I recommend the Wing Clipper tool).
Flying Geese - Method 2 (Make 4)
Draw a diagonal line on the wrong sides of the Fabric A and C - 3 1/2" squares.
Place a Fabric C (Background) square right sides together on the left side of a Fabric B rectangle as shown.
Sew just to the outside edge of the drawn line.
Repeat for the other 3 and then trim corner leaving 1/4" seam allowance.
Press toward Fabric C.
Place the Fabric A square right sides together on the right side of the above units. Sew just to the outside of the drawn line.
Repeat for the other 3 and then trim corners leaving 1/4" seam allowance.
Press toward Fabric A. These 4 Flying Geese should measure 3 1/2" x 6 1/2".
Stack the 4 Flying Geese from Method 1 and the 4 Flying Geese from Method 2 as shown.
Sew these units together with the Flying Geese from Method 2 on top so you can see your seam and can make sure you don't cut off the point of the Flying Geese.
Press toward the top Flying Geese (the ones from Method 1).
You will have 4 of the above unit that should measure 6 1/2" square.
Lay these units out as shown.
Sew the top 2 squares and the bottom 2 squares together and press toward the Fabric B Flying Geese.
To complete the block, line up that middle seam and sew the top and bottom together. I pressed this last seam open but you could do the twisted seam that we have done with our Four Patch blocks as well.
There you have it, your Yankee Puzzle block is done!
Be sure to post your pictures on the Ruth's Stitchery FaceBook page to be entered into our July drawing.
