25 Blocks in...can you believe it? Next week we will hit the half way mark, hopefully you have all been enjoying these blocks.
This week we are making spool blocks. I pulled a few fabrics from previous months for the "thread" colors.
You will need 5 colors and a background
Fabric A - Color 1
Fabric B - Color 2
Fabric C - Color 3
Fabric D - Color 4
Fabric E - Color 5 (Spool Caps)
Fabric F - Background
Cutting:
Fabric A - D - Cut 1 - 3 1/2" square
Fabric E - Cut 8 - 2" x 6 1/2" rectangles
Fabric F - Cut 8 - 2" x 3 1/2" rectangles
Fabric F - Cut 16 - 2" squares
Sewing:
Draw a diagonal line on the wrong side of the Fabric E - 2" squares.
Place a Fabric F square right sides together on one end of a Fabric E rectangle as shown.
Sew just to the outside of the drawn line.
Place another square right sides together on the other end of the Fabric E rectangle. Sew just to the outside edge of the drawn line. Be sure the drawn lines are going in opposite directions so you get the correct angle for your spool cap.
Trim the corners leaving a 1/4" seam allowance.
Press toward the Background triangles.
Repeat for the other Fabric E rectangles. You will have 8 spool caps.
Sew a Fabric F 2" x 3 1/2" rectangle on both sides of the Fabric A square.
Press seams to the Fabric A square.
Repeat for the Fabric B - D squares.
Take 2 of the "spool cap" pieces and the Fabric A unit from above and lay the pieces out as shown.
Sew the spool caps to the top and bottom of the Fabric A unit. Press toward the "thread" piece.
Your spool should measure 6 1/2" square. Repeat this for the other colors.
Layout your spool blocks as shown below.
Sew the top 2 spools and the bottom 2 spools together. I pressed these seams open.
Sew these 2 pieces together. Press the seam open.
The Spools block is complete!
