Last week, we did some Square in a Square units. This week we are making a Square in a Square x 4. I used a couple fabrics from the previous months bundles to complete this block.
You will be making slightly oversized units and trim down before you continue for the best accuracy.
You will need 4 colors and a background
Fabric A - Color 1
Fabric B - Color 2
Fabric C - Color 3
Fabric D - Background
Fabric E - Color 4
Cutting:
Fabric A: Cut 1 - 3 1/2" square
Fabric B - Cut 1 - 4 1/2" square
Cut this square twice on the diagonal so you have 4 triangles.
Fabric C - Cut 2 - 4 1/4" squares
Cut both of these squares once on the diagonal so you have 4 triangles.
Fabric D - Cut 1 - 7 1/2" square
Cut this square twice on the diagonal so you have 4 triangles.
Fabric E - Cut 2 - 7 1/4" squares
Cut these squares once on the diagonal so you have 4 triangles.
Sewing:
Take the Fabric A square and the 4 Fabric B triangles. Find the center of one side of the Fabric A square and the center of one of the Fabric B triangles. Pin right sides together as shown.
Sew 1/4" seam and then repeat for the opposite side. Press toward the Fabric B triangles.
Repeat this for the other 2 sides.
Press toward the Fabric B triangles.
This square will be slightly oversized. Trim down to 4 3/4" square, making sure that you leave 1/4" seam allowance from the points of the Fabric A square.
We will be repeating these steps for the rest of the block. Find the center of a Fabric C triangle, line that up with the center of one side of the above square.
When you sew this triangle to the center square, place the triangle on the bottom when you run it through your sewing machine so that you can make sure your seam runs accurately through the previous seam intersection.
Repeat for the opposite side and press toward the Fabric C triangles.
Repeat for the other 2 sides of the square.
Press toward the Fabric C triangles.
This square will be slightly oversized. Trim to 6 1/2". Make sure you have your 1/4" seam allowance.
Repeat these steps again using the Fabric D triangles.
Press toward the Fabric D triangles and continue to the next 2 sides.
Press toward the Fabric D triangles. This will be slightly oversized. Trim to 9" square, making sure you have your 1/4" seam allowance.
Repeat one more time for the Fabric E triangles.
Press toward the Fabric E triangles. Repeat for the other 2 sides.
Press toward Fabric E triangles. This will be slightly oversized. The final trim will be to 12 1/2" square.
You did it! Week 13 Square in a Square (x4) block is complete.
Don't forget to post your block pictures on the Ruth's Stitchery FaceBook page to be entered into our monthly drawing.
